sidhu: Polling results: Congress is the subject of social media jokes; Rahul, Sidhu find special mention

Congress’ rout in all five states in Assembly polls has opened the party up to social media memes and jokes, the best reserved for its leaders Rahul Gandhi and Navjot Singh Sidhu. As another state slipped out of the hands of Congress with its chief minister losing his two seats in Punjab, social media users were relentless in their criticism.

“The message is loud and clear, Congress has no choice but to get rid of the ‘Gandhi family’ and start over or the ‘party’ is over,” tweeted filmmaker Manish Mundra.

Posts with Gandhi’s descendant as the butt of jokes flooded the microblogging site with the image of him having a sundae in Wayanad before the poll results were declared became top trends. Many have asked the Congress leader to fly out of the country.

“Perfect time for Rahul Gandhi to take a break. International fights are also resuming,” one netizen tweeted.

Columnist and author Anand Ranganathan mimed a flight announcement to urge him to leave.

“Attracting the attention of passenger Rahul Gandhi… Mr. Rahul Gandhi… Thai Airways flight TG 316 from Delhi to Bangkok is now ready for departure. You are requested to pass the security check and contact the ground staff immediately. This is the last and last call…”, he tweeted.

Another Congress leader who has received particular attention from netizens is former cricketer Sidhu, who was blamed squarely by users for the party’s loss in Punjab.

“Sidhu did in Congress what he had done many times when he was a cricketer: bring out better batsmen and then bring out himself,” said author Arnab Ray.

Another Twitter account wondered if Sidhu would return to television after losing his seat in Amritsar East.

“Breaking News After watching Punjab exit polls, Navjot Singh Sidhu called Kapil Sharma. Archana Puran Singh should be careful,” the tweet said, referring to Kapil Sharma’s show in which Sidhu got a laugh. before leaving to explore politics.

Some have even compared the career of future Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to that of Sidhu.

“14 years ago #BhagwantMann stood before #NavjotSinghSidhu as a contender for the Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Today he is set to be the CM of a state where Sidhu is the leader of Congress.

“What an amazing journey for Mann and #AAP,” said one Twitter user.
