Koo becomes the world’s first social media platform to launch voluntary self-verification for all users

The Koo app launches voluntary self-verification, becoming the first social media platform in the world to do so. Any user can now self-verify their profile on the platform in seconds using their government-approved ID card. This decision allows users to prove the authenticity of their accounts on the platform, lending credibility to the thoughts and opinions they share. A visible marker in the form of a green checkmark will identify an account as self-verified. Koo is the first “significant social media intermediary” to enable this feature under Rule 4(7) of the Information Technology Rules (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Code of Ethics), 2021.

Users enter the government ID number, enter the OTP, and upon successful authentication, are self-verified with a green tick on their profile. The whole process is completed in seconds. The validation process is carried out by third parties authorized by the government. Koo would not store any information during the process.
