ITR 2021-22: the chorus for the extension of deadlines is growing on social networks

As the deadline for filing your tax return (RTI) approaches, people are now turning to Twitter to take matters into their own hands. In a report on Livemint, the chorus to extend the deadline for filing tax returns is growing, with #Extend_Due_Date_Immediately trending on the microblogging platform.

The deadline for filing an ITR each year is usually July 31. The Indian government, however, has often been lenient about this and offered an extension until December. However, the Center seems determined this year not to extend the deadline.

Several Twitter users tagged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and urged her to extend the deadline by taking matters into her own hands. Another Twitter user also mentioned how the delay in announcing this decision is having a huge impact on working professionals. Some other users attached a screenshot of the income tax portal, which was not working, making it difficult for people to file their returns.

The IT department also took to Twitter to announce that over 34 million ITRs have been filed till July 26, 2022. The deadline to file the ITR for AY 2022-23 is July 31, 2022. # FileNow if not yet filed! Avoid late fees!” read the taxman’s tweet.

According to the PTI report, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj clarified that the government has no plans to extend the ITR filing deadline this year.

Like how filing your tax return later than the due date invites taxpayers to pay penalties, filing the tax return early or before the due date has many advantages, including processing rapid visa applications, early approval of loans and the deferral of losses, among others.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Center will extend the deadline again this year.
