In a relatively short period of human history, social media has managed to have quite a significant impact. From the dawn of the first social media site called Six Degrees in 1997, to the rise in popularity of blogging sites closer to the 200s, social media as a whole has come a long, long way. And not all of the impact it has had has been on the positive end of the spectrum, which begs the question, can the powers of social media be used for good rather than evil? And the answer is yes, but it’s like walking a tightrope, so the only way to be successful is to keep an eye on the prize and not fall into the negative traps of social media.

So, to answer the question, “Can social media be your best friend?” people should first consider what the original intention of social media was and try as best they can to let that guide their decision-making.

What is the power of social networks?

Simply put, the purpose of social media in its early days was to connect people, help them communicate easily and also facilitate business growth by allowing them to reach their desired audience. And the power of social media lies in the fact that people can take advantage of these platforms, which have a very wide reach, to expand their circle of influence and engage directly with the people they want to talk to, easily and effectively.

How do you properly harness the power of social media and make it your friend?

1. Focus on creating and curating content

People tend to get hooked on numbers early on, when in fact what should be the focus when trying to build a business is actually content creation and the aesthetics of the flow, etc. The content that is published should be visually appealing, have a story and also have takeaways. This ensures that the audience and the people consuming the content walk away with something, be it a good feeling, new learning, etc.

2. Know your audience

It’s every business owner’s job to know their target audience. When someone starts a business, one of the first questions they should ask themselves is who am I talking to or for whom am I creating this and what need does it meet? Based on this, they can then focus on all the demographics that will allow them to understand how to build their social media strategy, based on their audience, their needs, and what they are looking for.

3. Develop a strategy

It is also useful to think of tools that could help the company and divide it in the growth phase. If the first phase is to let the public know the brand, the next phase can be to study the competitors and determine how to capture more market share for growth, etc.

4. Collaborate

While healthy competition keeps people on their toes, you should never be shy about collaborating. In today’s world, much can be achieved and accomplished by avoiding toxic competition and choosing to seek out like-minded people and collaborate with them for mutual benefit.

5. Engage with your audience as well as others

It’s also wise to remember that you can’t and shouldn’t create content, distribute it and forget about it. Some of the most successful celebrities and social media brands make it a point to not only engage with their audience on their own content, but to go the extra mile and engage with the pages they follow as well. Followers love to feel like they’re heard and listened to and other Pages also love getting the attention of their contemporaries.

6. Network

Searching for people and building a network is essential to spreading something. The greater the reach, the higher the likelihood of finding someone who can help take the business to the next level. As the old bible verse says, “Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you”

7. Mix

While building the business/brand is the priority, there should always be a mix of authentic value-added content and brand-focused promotional content. The least successful pages on social media are always the ones that blast their followers with promotional post after promotional post relentlessly.

8. Don’t compare or obsess

The downside of social media that everyone should be aware of is that it becomes very easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to each other. The useful thing to remember is that everyone is on their own path and has their own struggles that might not be made public on social media, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Also, obsessively tracking your growth is something everyone does, but always remember; there are many metrics to gauge and measure success, and follower count is just one of them
